Minecraft: Java Edition servers come ready to play, with the right Java version and memory settings chosen for you.

#Server software

Pick the software at checkout, or change it later in Settings:

#Versions

Choose the version at checkout or in Settings. Java is matched automatically: Java 8 for 1.16.5 and older, Java 17 for 1.17 to 1.20.4, and the newest Java for later versions. Back up before a big version jump; worlds can't be downgraded.

#Plugins and mods

The Plugins tab (called Mods on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge) searches Modrinth and installs a compatible version in one click, into plugins/ or mods/. Restart the server to load it. You can also upload .jar files yourself with the file manager or SFTP.

Vanilla can't load plugins or mods. Switch to Paper for plugins or Fabric for mods in Settings.

#Players

The Players tab shows who's online, with their skins, and lets you op and deop, manage the whitelist, kick and ban (with a reason) and unban. It also lists recent players. The server must be running, because changes are sent as console commands.

#Memory

Your server gets the plan's memory minus a small reserve for Java itself, with tuned garbage-collection flags (Aikar's), so it doesn't get killed for going over the limit under load. You don't need to set -Xmx yourself.

#Common tasks

• Upload a world: stop the server, upload the world folder (zip it first and use Unarchive), make sure it's called world or set level-name in server.properties, then start.
• Change the MOTD, difficulty or max players: edit server.properties in Files, or use Settings where available, then restart.
• Bedrock players: install Geyser and Floodgate from the Plugins tab on Paper, and add a port for Geyser.
